We camped in Maple Creek tonight, just past the Albertan border. It was Canada Day so most restaurants and gas stations were closed. We were lucky and met a guy who owned one of the gas stations and he opened up for us especially! Phew! We were taking the backroads back down to Highway 1 from Drumheller, so towns were few and far between and I was running fast out of petrol.
The only restaurant open was the local chinese one - BUT OF COURSE!!!! But oh my, the food was genuine.. the owner started immediately talking Cantonese to me and Matt then wow'd the whole family with his Mandarin. The owner's from Guangzhou and moved here 12 years ago with the whole family, kids, siblings and even the old mama (grandma).... so typical of small towns here!
We were joking how different Maple Creek is from China, and she joked that here she could swing a machine gun round and not shoot a single person but back in Guangzhou she could do the same and take out at least 800 people in one go!! She's definitely got the prairie humour after all these years! Couldn't have asked for a better meal at the end of a long hot day.
You know the feeling you get after a long day's sail out in the open water? How you still feel like the floor beneath you is still rocking and swaying when you are really standing on solid ground? Well, after riding a whole day, i felt like i was still on the move with the trees and wind rushing by me.
