Why is there so much begging in Ethiopia?
That is the question that has plagued my mind these days. I wonder if it isn't the after effects of Ethiopia's unfortunate 1984-1985 famine where thousands of aid workers flooded the country and handed out food rations like candy cane at a Christmas parade.
Kids, adults, old women, they all do it. Hands outstretched, asking for something.
Do people just expect handouts now from foreigners since that is all they know?
Giving to people who are starving is one thing. Giving to redeem your guilt is another.
