we'll be back

Kinigi, Rwanda
Thursday, May 15, 2008

After breakfast (home-baked bread and granola, fresh fruit, and delicious local cheese) by the lakeshore, Matt and Charlie (guy we met from Nanaimo) brought the motor down from the boat house to the dock while I had a little go at playing the piano.

As soon as the motor was up and running, Lyn took us out to their organic farm just 6km up the lake's shore.

They bought the plot of land several years back and are turning it into a community-outreach farming program where students from the university come and learn about agriculture and sustainable farming. There are also long-term plans to build the Lusi Retirement retreat here, and use their present house for guests.

After lunch, Lyn dropped us off at the border and wishing we didn't have to leave so soon, we promised to try and visit in the future - perhaps with our children.

For an interesting read about the war in Eastern Congo, go to The Roots of War in Eastern Congo.

We crossed back into Rwanda, having completed all the formalities in just under 10 minutes.

After a bit of a struggle with mobile phone connections, we finally got hold of a taxi who took us back to Paradis Malahide Hotel (8 km away), where we picked up Foxy and headed towards Kinigi.

Tonight, we camped at Kinigi Guest House (it had been a while since we used the rooftop tent and it felt really good), had some good tilapia curry dinner and banana brulee for dessert, and went off to bed.

Tomorrow would be an early start for my gorilla trekking. I'm so excited.
